How long a bathroom remodel really takes

Three weeks for a hall bath, five for a primary, and the two things that make it longer.

The short answer: about three weeks for a hall bath and four to five for a primary bath with a tiled shower. Here’s where the days go.

The first week

Demo takes a day. Then we look at what’s under the old tub or tile. In houses around Columbus built before 1960, we often find old cast iron drains or soft subfloor, and we’ll show you before we fix either one.

The middle

Plumbing and electric, an inspection, then cement board and waterproofing. We flood-test every shower pan for 24 hours and send you the photo. Tile takes the most days, because good tile work can’t be rushed.

The end

Vanity, glass, fixtures, paint and a walk-through. Frameless glass is measured after the tile is done, so it adds about a week of waiting.

What makes it longer

  • Special-order tile or fixtures. Pick them before we start and the clock doesn’t stop.
  • Surprises behind the wall. Rot or old plumbing usually adds two to four days.

If it’s your only bathroom, tell us. We’ll plan the work so you have a working toilet every night.
